Curriculum Overview

Students enroll each year in a minimum of 8 Chinese credits (Fall and Spring). Summer or Winter term domestic or overseas programs can add an additional 3-8 credit hours. Classes meet five days per week (seminar + drill/lab) during the regular semester. Students also receive weekly one-on-one tutoring with native speakers. All Chinese Flagship courses count toward Honors College credit requirements.

Students enroll in courses according to their Chinese proficiency level, which means it’s possible to enter the program at any stage. Those with prior Chinese language experience will take a placement test to determine the appropriate course level.

Each semester, students’ language progress is assessed to ensure steady advancement. Some may fulfill course equivalencies through domestic or international Chinese immersion programs offered during the Summer term. Because of this flexibility, each student’s Flagship coursework timeline may look slightly different.

Summer or Winter immersion programs provide an excellent opportunity to strengthen language proficiency in a short period of time. All students are strongly encouraged to participate in these immersive experiences to enhance both their linguistic skills and cultural understanding.
