College Counseling
The ultimate goal of The Gatton Academy’s college counseling program is to assist each student in finding the right “fit” for them in their next steps after graduation from Gatton. Our programming focuses on preparing students to identify, and present strong applications for, opportunities that align with their academic goals, interests, and future plans.
The Gatton Academy’s College Counseling and Testing Specialist works to guide students through the various stages of the college admissions process. Frequently Asked Questions
Students graduate from Gatton with a high school diploma and an associates degree from WKU, but this does not affect their eligibility to apply for admission or scholarships as a first-time first-year student.
- Each college and university has its own policies regarding transfer credit, so how your WKU courses transfer will depend on where you plan to attend. Some institutions will accept most or all of your WKU coursework, while others may limit the number of credit hours that can transfer. Institutions decide whether courses apply toward your major or count only as elective credit.
- If you plan to attend WKU, all of your credits will fully transfer. Other public universities are also typically very transfer-friendly with WKU coursework. However, private colleges may be more selective about which credits they accept or how they apply them.
- Many colleges maintain a transfer equivalency website where you can enter WKU course names or numbers to see how they might transfer to that particular institution. Keep in mind that these tools only list courses that have previously been evaluated for transfer. If you have a WKU course that isn’t listed, you can usually work with the transfer credit or registrar’s office at your future school to have it reviewed.
During their second semester, students have the opportunity to choose a staff member who they would like to write the counselor letter of recommendation for their college applications. The student and their assigned staff member then meet monthly throughout their senior year. In addition to providing individual support to the student throughout the college application process, these meetings also enable the staff member to write a letter of recommendation that is unique to each student.
When most students come to us, they are familiar with our in-state schools and a few highly selective universities. Our goal is for each student to find the right “fit” for them based on their unique interests and goals. This means that our students end up all over!
