Learning Objectives
Navigating Difficult Conversations
Difficult conversations don’t have to be uncomfortable or confrontational. This session gives supervisors practical frameworks to make those talks easier and more productive. Using the SBI (Situation–Behavior–Impact) and DESC (Describe–Express–Specify–Consequences) feedback models, participants will learn how to share concerns and address issues constructively — keeping conversations focused on solutions instead of tension. Through examples and interactive discussion, participants will explore common workplace scenarios and practice applying these techniques to build confidence and clarity in their communication.
Supervisors and Workplace Investigations: Understanding Roles, Responsibilities, and Collaboration
The Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) and Human Resources invite all supervisors to attend a training focused on understanding their roles and responsibilities in workplace investigations. Supervisors are often the first to become aware of employee concerns and may be directly involved when an employee they supervise is part of an investigation. This session will clarify expectations for supervisors during OIE and/or HR investigations, including confidentiality, cooperation, appropriate communication, and support for employees. The session will also address the distinct yet sometimes overlapping jurisdictions of OIE and HR and how each office’s scope differs, when their work may intersect, and how supervisors can effectively partner with both to ensure a coordinated institutional response.
